My message to IN Gov. Mike Pence

I just sent this in via the Indiana Governor's Office's web site:

Dear Governor Pence -

I just read about the needle sharing program in your state [here].

As a man who was baptized Christian and attended a couple of private Christian schools growing up, I am familiar with the concept of Christian mercy. Because of that and because I am also a man who recently graduated with an MS in Public Policy, I find it commendable that you approved the program even as unsavory as the idea may have been to you, as ultimately it is important to do the thing that is the most beneficial without hurting more people. It is my hope that you have competent and diligent social scientists who are managing the situation and are applying the program the best way possible.

With this in mind, I find it disappointing that you have signed the so-called "Religious Freedom" bill into law. I find it immoral for Indiana to protect deliberate discrimination against LGBT people or any other class of people and claim it as an exercise of religion. Such a law may have passed with ease in the Jim Crow South, since I'm sure many businesspeople in those days felt that refusing to serve or allow entry by blacks was based on their concept of "God's law" and how He meant the races to be separate and unequal. But down here in Georgia, we eventually rejected that particular brand of bigotry, religiously-excused or not. I would have hoped you would have learned from our example. Down here, people were hit in the face with rocks, bitten by dogs, and blown down the street with firehoses for insisting on equal treatment. Is that how Indiana will eventually treat its legally-discriminated-against classes?
